Twisted Irony

January 10, 2009 at 11:44 am (Corruption, Deaf Civil Rights, Government, Interpreters, Politics)

For those who follow the news, it’s impossible to escape any news story about Rod Blagojevich, the Governor of Illinois who was impeached yesterday by the Illinois House. The more the news expose him, the more unbelievable how corrupt this guy is.

On September 12, 2007 Governor Blagojevich signed Illinois Senate Bill 259, which  established statewide licensing standards for registered interpreters for the deaf.

Then it was publicized on CNN and on some media outlets this week that Blagojevich hired a woman to interpret for the deaf, when her only experience was a one-week class in sign language when she was in grade school.

Talk about twisted irony…!

Huh? Sounds like he covered his eyes while signing the bills… I wonder if he read the bills before he signed or veteoed any bills?

Sounds like he is a puppet, pulled by some unknown powers?

    Crazy.

  2. A Deaf Pundit said,

Karen, he was arrested by the FBI for trying to sell Obama’s senate seat.

He is definitely not a puppet!

OMG!! I had no idea.. I find it funny now that I think about it. I guess it’s safe to say that he is an idiot, I mean after all he did try to sell Senate’s seat. *rolls*

Even CNN announced twice about him hiring a non signing sign language interpreter. It was finally something about sign language interpreter in mass media!

One thing I like how they quote “interpreter for deaf who does not know sign language”. Let’s see if Larry King will interview this person who duped Rob.

Tsk, tsk, tsk…..due to the shortage? Dunno.

Don’t know all the details in Illinois. Sorry.

    Happy New Year.

The guy (Blago) is obviously a crook, so I’m not too surprised he didn’t pay attention to what he was signing.

At least the journalist him/herself knew enough to know that one course in elementary school does not count as “knowing the language”.

WG – no it’s not due to shortage.

It’s how they operate, at least from my experience at Lollapalooza and talking to a friend who lived there. He has had problem getting certificated license interpreters at Lolla but they used the terps who were taking ASL courses.

Anybody knows sign language? You got the job!

Prior to this bill, interpreters could come in ILL to interpret that caused problems with the local interpreters.

If you were a governor of ILL, you could find and afford to get a qualified interpreter. :-D

Unless you are not educated and/or cheap…

    Or a crook. ;)

    Hi Iammine!

    Hugs to you ooxoxoxoxo

That’s my point, Iammine. Due to $$$$…..RID vs. State Certification…..if that’s what it causes the recession’s outcome? :-/

    Happy New Year!

    White Ghost,

Blago didn’t hire an interpreter. He just found a woman who *claimed* to know sign.. but she did not, and hired her. The man has been arrested by the FBI for many, many reasons. I just find it interesting that the media reported on this, considering the long list of crimes he’s been accused of.

    DP–

I agree and perhaps he just was looking for a “short cut” to get an interpreter through a friend…who knows?

    Dirty business, isn’t he?

    *Sigh*

  12. A Deaf Pundit said,

    Yup – very dirty business!

  13. Karen Mayes said,

Yup, I am aware of his being arrested. I just wonder if we all know the full story. Now the facts are emerging and so far the last three (including this governer) have not had stellar reputations :o (

Mobs still run Illinois govt? I am being sarcastic ;o)

  14. Seek Geo said,

Hey, I speak Spanish very well.. what? You want me to prove it? Okay!

Au Revoir! See, I proved it!

Anybody care to hire me as Spanish translator?

    Hmm? ;-)

Yeah right! I’m puzzled and thought “Where is the action from Illinois Commission for the Deaf/HH????” I already know who they are! Sorry… I cannot do anything for them because I do NOT currently live in the state of Illinois! Deep sighs! Thank you, DP for blogging this!

  17. IamMine said,

Hey – missed your message, WG! Happy New Year to you, too! :) xoxo

    That was funny, SG! :D

  18. DT said,

Hahaha, what’s even funnier about SG’s joke is that “au revoir” isn’t even Spanish! hahaha
