When I Say Do Not Contact Me…
Normally I wouldn’t blog something like this, but I feel compelled to do so, after a dispute between Barry Sewell and I arose on DVTV, centering on IamMine’s vlog, which now has been taken down because she could not respond to all of the commenters demanding further clarification until Thanksgiving.
IamMine’s vlog was prompted by Shawn’s meltdown after drmzz had told her that Karen and others on Candy’s blog were supposedly making fun of Shawn for her comments on MishkaZena’s blog here. Not very many of us agreed with drmzz regarding that, and IamMine was outraged about the incident to the point where she vlogged about it. In her vlog, she also named Barry, because Shawn and Barry had a confrontation where both IamMine and I thought Barry was being excessively harsh with her. Shawn is not in the same league as Barry – far from it.
So I responded to IamMine’s vlog agreeing with her that the emotional games needed to stop, and that both drmzz and Barry needed to back off from Shawn and others like her. As expected, Barry was not pleased with my comment, and that is how our dispute arose. Eventually I emailed him, explaining in no uncertain terms what my position was:
Barry,
I’m going to be blunt here, and it’s probably going to make us enemies as a result, but I really don’t care at this point.
I am not going to apologize for what I said. While Shawn’s meltdown was prompted from the situation on DeafRead and Mike, Mel was pointing out the fact that people are playing emotional games with her and other vulnerable individuals, which needs to stop. Mel used you as an example, which I agree with… when you and Shawn had that confrontation, and mind you, I am not saying what Shawn did was right.. she was wrong to do what she did and said to you but the fact remains is that you were excessively rough on her and you were relentless, showing her no mercy until she caved in to you.
That woman has gone through unimaginable things during her childhood, and she is deeply scarred and vulnerable as a result. It is so easy to push her around, manipulate her, and make her give into whatever people want from her. So while you two may have worked out your differences now… Knowing Shawn, and with my three year formal training in psychology along with just over a decade informally, I know that it’s pretty damn easy to make that happen with her.
Shawn needs to be handled tactfully, and sometimes with kid gloves. You should’ve known better, Barry.

He responded to me at quite some length, which I’m not going to post here. I responded back to him that no, he did not need to say any more, and that he was not going to change his position and nor would I.
You would think it would end there, but it did not. He emailed me again which said:

For your information… I was not trying to change your position. It was not a goal of mine so there is no disappointment on my behalf.

My response to him was simply, “Thanks for letting me know.” Hint: That’s a sarcastic response.
You would think that would be a clue that I was not interested in pursuing the discussion any further. But when I responded to Shawn’s vlog about AG Bell and Jean Boutcher - which wasn’t really directly related to the dispute between me and Barry… He asked me why I hadn’t apologized to him yet, because now it was supposedly clear that I now understood that it was just a misunderstanding about what led Shawn to meltdown, and basically wanted a public clarification from me.
I responded to him that there was no misunderstandings, and our emails had stated our positions quite clearly and we should leave it at that.
He emailed me again, stating that he had left me a video response to mine, at which point I left both a video response to him there telling him to leave me the fuck alone, along with an email response which said:
Barry,
I already stated my position, and just because I did not rebut you, does not mean that I accept your position that this was a misunderstanding.
There is absolutely no misunderstanding. Period.
Do not contact me again. I am NOT interested in continuing this discussion with you. Period.

You would think he would respect my wishes to not contact me again… but no.. he contacted me again.
He told me on DVTV to leave him alone as well, yet, he emailed me back after my response to him to not contact him. It is clear that Barry is continuing this argument, through the emails and arguments on DVTV under Shawn’s vlog.
Furthermore, he is also continuing to ignore what I had stated in my first email, which is causing deliberate confusion on what the issue is really all about. I personally think my email to him explains my position extremely well. It is not about Barry causing Shawn’s meltdown. It is about him playing emotional games and showing absolutely no mercy to these who dare to disagree with him publicly, to the point of harassment!
And now, I am being harassed by Barry Sewell. I don’t care how polite someone is in their email to me, and Barry was polite to me in his last email…. but when I tell you not to contact me ever again… it means just that.
I am making this public, because people need to know about this. The twisting and harassment needs to stop. IMMEDIATELY.

Jeannette — it is open secret that we do not agree on many things but I do have an enormous respect for your thoughts and comments from time to time.
Your entry about Barry Sewell is right on the target — unfortunately, you are not the only one who experienced such things like that.
Back then, I vlogged that I disagreed with him — all hell broke loose. He has a misguided but loyal puppets whom he dispatched to harass me frequently. You’re correct that Barry’s asset is to befuddle the original discussion into something confusing so that he can manipulate and attack non-stop someone else. Like Shawn.
You do not know how glad I am to see this — Yes, people dislike and like my bloggings but blogging is the only avenue for me to vent my thoughts, that’s it. I don’t go that far like Barry to organize the letter-writing campaign in order to get someone lose their jobs and so on. And it is disgusting that for a long time, people has allowed this miscreant to continue.
Thank you for doing this. Be forewarned, you’ll be attacked but I know you’re strong enough to fend it off.

Reread what DP wrote. DP indicated that she requested Sewell to *stop* communicating. He chose not to. He kept on trying to communicate via DVTV EVEN after they stopped via emails. No, again, Last Wednesday, IAMMine (Mel) indicated that Barry has the tendency to push, push, push and push people until he gets what he wanted. And that is wrong. For the last time, Brance, the original vlog by IAMMINE was about Barry’s APPROACH. Later, IAMMINE apologized FOR not able to respond to EACH commentators but Mel has not backed from what she asserted about Barry’s relentless approach towards others, especially Shawn.
If you cannot understand what “patronize” meant in the first place, it indicates that I have no desire to discuss or communicate with a miscreant like you, okay?
Off to watch the DVDs for the rest of my evening — expect me to respond? Tomorrow if I feel like it.

DVTV is turning into one big gossip mill. I daresay Tayler will have to introduce another rule, one that calls for “asking for clarification” before jumping to conclusions. *roll of eyes*
I think we all of us have to acknowledge that human error is part and parcel of any kind of communication, including v/blogging. For another thing, there are plenty of other things to do besides sitting in front of the computer and ranting/raging at others who don’t agree with you.
DP is entitled to her position and doesn’t feel she needs to apologize to anyone for that position. She is trying to highlight the problem of some d/Deaf people taking advantage of others and twisting a misunderstanding to mean something that it isn’t. Such people take advantage of those who may not be well-versed in English and/or came to ASL much later in their lives by playing on that person’s emotions or naivete.
Unfortunately in highlighting the issue, names were mentioned and the finger-pointing flew. Think it’s time everybody went home to finish visiting with families and friends. Happy Thanksgiving to y’all!

Internet, especially with text comments, is a place where misunderstandings and misinterpretations can happen… just like Mishka warned in her latest blog posting.
Former ASLisRisen and I already spoke with each other and we agreed to keep communication lines open for the sake of clarification and that we would NOT pay attention to any one who’d try tell both of us differently. If in doubt or in need for clarification, contact the person. If disagreeing and preferring to back off and to be left alone, respect the person’s wishes… wait till the dust settle and then we’ll see what will happen.
Mel did apologize at the end before taking her vlog down. She feels bad enough. Can we just let it go and back off for a period of time, please?
And I apologize for my part in this whole thing, but in a way I don’t regret, because it shows how easy someone or anyone can paint anyone in black, to play on anyone’s emotions, etc. Dangerous game, and I called out on it to the DR administration to try to put a stop to it, when I first noticed the video comment made by one commenter about “DR Women” mocking fun of one vlogger (which is COMPLETELY false, as we all know) made by one commenter on DVTV.
I hope that things will get straighten out. If things get heated up, back out until things cool down.

The vote button in Extra does work, and other v/blogs have been moved to the front page as a result, but because I named Barry and publicized the emails, it is a very grey area. It is not completely clear about whether a blogger can publish his/her own emails with names, so DeafRead decided to file it in Extra.
I don’t have a problem with my blog being filed in Extra. People are still reading my blog and getting the whole story.

Yes, you’re right that people still go into Deafread Extra and read your blog. Getting a whole story is the important key for the readers. So that way, people wouldn’t get brainwashed, confused, or wrong ideas…They need to see it all by getting all puzzles together to see a whole picture.

Aslrisen, it was like years ago but really it is few months ago. I never bring it up with past. The past is over. If you bring it up with the past so it means you’re very obsession over little thing. I did not make it worse for you. You got backward. You got me and another vlogger which you means InsaneMisha. You brought it worse between me and her. So Misha and I moved along very well and still respect each others’ boundaries. Really, I am not interesting in the past …it is getting me so boring about this. Hi all,
I want to take the opportunity here to apologize for my vlog last Wednesday that I realized was not appropriate for several reasons: it being a holiday, not being able to be there to respond to comments, and causing additional stress for Shawn as well as other people.
That was unnecessary and uncalled for on my behalf. I felt very bad and like many, I was under a lot of stress.
I meant to come back on Friday to clarify but got tied up. I also was still stressed out and I learned that I should not vlog when I am under stress.
For that, people have every right to be angry with me and I completely understand that.
I reacted emotionally to Shawn’s breakdown and that really set me off.
When I am under that kind of stress, my family and friends know better not to say anything that would intensify the stress level.
Does that make sense at all? For example, I talked to two friends briefly on a late Friday night about what was said to me under my vlog and they wouldn’t say anything but to worry about myself first, that I need to take care of myself first, my family and studies that were more important.
As for Barry, I rest my case.
Again, I apologize for the poor timing and not responding to the commenators that I did not get the chance to view except for Mike’s last ones.
This will stick with me for a long time because everyone has the right to have a peaceful thanksgiving with their families. That I feel very, very horrible about. That was totally out of my character but I take the responsibility for my own actions and words.

Ahh, Mel, you’re human. We all do things we later realize wasn’t the right time or whatever. It’s no big deal, you tried to explain that you could not respond to anyone and even I understood it immediately when you said you will not be able to respond until after Thanksgiving. For some people they might see it differently.
Also, I think alot of people were confused with some things. For example, not everyone understood or knew about the incident between Barry and Shawn.

And, as we have seen here on this blog site and all the comments. It appears that those who blog or read blogs and those who vlogs and watch vlogs are interpreting things differently. Lots of misunderstandings etc.
Which is why it would be NICE if we all ASK to clarify things before saying anything if we don’t understand. Someone assumed something and ran over to DVTV and created a silly mess.
Some of the comments here borders on ridiculousness, I’m not gonna go there..but it seems really silly to me. And then again, I’m not going to get into something that really should be between two people. Additionally, some of the comments by DVTV people putting DP down here in this commenting site tells me DVTV has a LONG way to go to creating a respectful dialogue between commenters. Like Hoey Hemp said in his comment over at DVTV in DP’s vlog over there, that’s life, move on! No one is going to agree with everything. Don’t get personal with a person. Just state your point and move on.
Bottom line, this all should never have happened in the first place. It’s childish. We’re not KIDS! or are we?

Mel… you could see this in a different way. It has been a very good lesson for some of us. It helped Shawn and me get back together, clearing up misunderstandings. But yeah, what a trip for many of us. So in many ways, it is a blessing in disguise, if not for some other people. But at least we got almost everything out on the table.

Iammine, we all do things without forethought, human nature to respond to an issue without thinking things thru. It happens in real life as well as online. Don’t beat yourself up over it.
Many of us online here know it wasn’t intentional on your part to not be able to respond to the tremendous reaction. Others make assumptions without thinking there may have been a perfectly logical reason why you couldn’t respond right away. Holidays are times meant for family and close friends, but some people weren’t thinking that.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday with those who deserve it most– your family.
Since this is DP’s blog, DP has the right to write anything she wishes. Same thing with her signing in her vlog. But I tell ya, the DVTV nastiness is spilling over here at DR, it is getting uncivilized and ridikkulous with all this finger-pointing, and it will drive away the commenters who have contributed to intelligent dialogue here on DR.
Folks, start leaving your HISTORY at the door when you enter online, whether in DVTV or DR, and stick to the topic, if you want respect from others here. To you DP. Since I’m unpacking from the long 8.5 hours trip, some more thoughts came to mind. Shawn told me via email that she was already affected before I even let her know. I guess she became humiliated and upset when I brought this to her attention via my video comment.

Come on…most of deaf people were born with something inside of themselves that English or advanced words/terms would never be their first language as a deaf human being. They were born to communicate with their hands.
These words you used in your comments don’t exist in deaf dictionary of ASL but I’m not going to stop you guys to use your hands to communicate with each other (typing or signing..lol) I believe using hands to communicate on internet is a best thing we ever saw in a long time and it can help others to learn fast, or understand english better in ASL. Yeah, it’s fuckin’ limited right now with 500+ but we, deafies, all can be very creative and make it much more beautiful language in the world with many many ways to interpret with our hands.
That’s why vlogs, videos of expressions or deaf movies were born right here on internet about few years ago where anyone who own webcam, video camera, or digital camera with computer or whatever..they can use it and communicate with hands with others with their thoughts, art of expression, or story..etc. Sad, these stupid people caused a big mess and one day no one won’t come forward with a video of ASL or whatever.
You see, it is very very brave of deaf people to take a stand and be recorded out there even though they don’t have any other options, does they? Even for these deafies who dont have webcam and try to communicate by typing on comments or whatever. Have ya wonder why hearing people STILL don’t use their own voices to be recorded or with a video? Most of them prefers bloggin’ or typing than use their voices or be seen.

Ya know, this is just an online, virtual blogosphere. Yet, here on DR or DVTV, deafies take things so damn personally.
I’ve seen ten times worse on hearing blogs, and I do mean, full force, the most unimaginable foul language and putting-down’s of other bloggers or commenters that you can imagine. The thing is, most hearing bloggers and commenters let this stuff roll off their backs and they’re no worse for it. They don’t take it personally and they move on.
In the deaf community, the smallness and closeness of it makes any online spat more like a family feud.
Now, don’t get your gander up. But truly, this is not real-life face-to-face interaction here. Vlogs don’t match that either. Get a grip! Get over grinding that ax and move on, y’all.

Ann C, this is very different. We are talking about people we already know in real life. Most of them are not strangers. So there is a blurring between the real life and the virtual life.
I’ve seen worse behavior in the hearing forums. That’s how I’ve developed my thick skin. However, they usually don’t know each other personally… They don’t encounter each other outside the Internet.
It’s like comparing oranges and apples.

MZ, I’m aware that some, if not all, v/bloggers here know each other to some extent, personally, or their schooling, etc.
I don’t mean to offend, but I believe personal interaction is rated far more superior than v/blogging is, among deafies and hearing alike. That kind of interaction should be taken more seriously than what is said online.
In other words, online blogging should be taken as a more impersonal form of communication and seen for what it represents, words on a screen or signs on a video, not a personal interaction. People in real life don’t often say/sign same online, although many of us struggle to be honest with our messages regardless of the medium or in real life.
Arezoo, you know THREE languages, Farsi sign language, English, and ASL. You have one leg up on Ridor, as far as MULTI-LANGUAGE skills go. There you go, girl. BTW hearing Americans aren’t perfect with English either, for that matter. Neither am I, and I’m deaf.

I agree personal interaction is a lot more superior to online interaction too. But technology has always been one of our main avenues of communication. So this is more personal for us than it is for the hearing.
You can have a confrontation with a hearing person online, and never run into that person ever again, online or offline. That does make a huge difference. More than anyone can imagine, I think.
I also think that with the advent of blogging and vlogging for us in the Deaf Community, we’re starting to learn how to use our voices (hands really) on such a high and visible level. We’ve never had this kind of power before, whereas the hearing have had it for a long time.
So I think with time, we’ll sort everything out, where things don’t get TOO personal. I hope, anyway.

Alright!!! all this Publicity is for all it’s worth for what?? this isn’t going anywhere..
For example, you working for a company say 50 to 30,000 people. Are you gonna tell every single person in this company about what she/he done to you or whatever reason?? NOO!! you know what they will tell you??? deal with it among yourselves not have people involved and if you can’t deal with it then you go up the management to resolve this within a certain time frame.

You all are right in some ways, Ann_C, MZ, and DP…
Before I joined the online Deaf Community, I was heavily involved in the Pearl Jam community for years.
There are a lot of similarities. It is a small community (but much bigger than the Deaf Community) but we all connected because a lot of people do not understand why we love Pearl Jam so much and to the outsiders, we are freaks and to some others elitists. Like bumping into a deafie, we get excited. Likewise, we get excited when we see another PJ fan.
We get a reputation for being the most spoiled fans (we are) and we scare people who want to join. Thanks to a few a**holes, there is a bad impression of how a ‘typical diehard’ is. It is usually viewed in a negative light.
You would even hear that they are snobs and the most selfish people who would go to extreme ends in getting closer seats even though they have been to 40+ shows. That is even considered as a cough… and I’ve been to 14 shows. That’s a whoppeedoo.
There are even groups within the community, establishing a club based on an album, bashing others who heavily favored another. It’s silly, I tell you.
There was even a outcry about a show supposedly being an epic show because a lot of fans sent postcards requesting that the entire album, Yield be sung at the show, the same place the Who played where 11 people died in Cleveland.
Did they? Nope, they played a standard setlist and boy, were people pissed – feeling betrayed after years of loyalty and support to the band. *laughs*
I honestly told people I thought it was the best show just because the interpreters were awesome in working with me before the show. I really had a great time!
There is even pre/post parties where everyone gets together…and there are times where people say “oh no… so-so is going to be there? I am not going! I refuse to…. Unless you do this or that…..”
People even go far to blasting others for not knowing certain songs and telling them they are not fans.
Stupid shit like that.
Oh yes, there are even some rules what a PJ fan should do or should not… what a joke. I do not follow ‘em.
And this was all created from the online PJ community.
I could go on and on… but anyway… hahaha.
We can and are making a difference on DR/DVTV.

We, Deaf people, needs to learn to live/deal with each other as we could become much strong group against anything, I mean much stronger than hearing people. Let me tell you about this, it is really really big world out there, and lot of people have their own lives, hangin’ around with their circle of friends, workers or whatever. Yet, we, deaf people, clinch together and grow as one big deaf community in the world! We came from many different backgrounds and etc.. not like others – we all are unique in our own ways but yet, we need to learn and unite together like a big happy deaf family no matter what!
We should be arm in arm as we unite into one world… with other people all over in the world. We should become one and explore much more in the universe…Sad, we continue to fight each other over again and not make any difference in our lives.
It goes for censorship of deaf comments (typing or signing) and etc…it goes for all deaf online communities. I guess we are wayyy off the chart, man. We need to face this and try to deal with it… removing vlogs, blogs, or comments in past already created a circle where we run around and going after each other forever!

Good for you! I am glad you brought up this issue about Barry. I have watched him and it is scary to see some of his followers. It reminds me of some of cult leaders and their followers who are blinded by leaders’ actions. People like you and me can see things clearly. I believe that is what DBC leaders had to deal with. Barry is obviously not a healthy leader. That was why DBC couldn’t continue working with him.
I don’t always agree with what you said in the past, but this time…thank you.

Hi all,
The attention on this blog has been truly overwhelming – as of 11 am today, Dec 4th, I’ve gotten 3,237 views on this blog post. I also broke my previous blog record for most hits, with this post. 1,844 hits in a 24 hour period, defeating the previous record of 1,730 hits in 24 hours.
Then I have 486 votes on DeafRead Extra, which has NEVER happened before!
Things are finally dying down and I have final exams next week, so I think it is best for me, so I am able to better focus on studying, for the comments to be closed on this blog. This blog post will stay up, but no more comments will be allowed.
