Impersonation and Libel

February 9, 2008 at 9:52 am (Blogging, Deafness)

It was brought to my attention that someone on Mike McConnell’s blog left a comment saying:

“The person who mentioned AGBell’s grandson is Brian Riley, so take everything he says with more than a grain of salt. He is also “Deep Ears” and writes stuff for Eggbert on agbellinfo.com”

Written By Deaf Pundit, the Deaf Edge

I have never said or written that quote in that comment. That accusation is false and I do not appreciate being cited for things that I have never said or written. I have emailed Mike McConnell to give me the ip address of that person so then I can consult with an attorney about whether to take legal action or not.

Is he going to give you the IP address?

Oh my gosh! Seriously, these people have no idea using someone’s name. It happened to me a few times and I can guarantee you a few of these I probably never knew.

I’m glad you stepped into this and I hope everyone is aware that this is serious case. *sighs*

That’s quite disgusting. Not the first time nor will it be the last time.

    Cowards. :-/

Yes, I saw it on Mike’s blog too. Looks like somebody is trying to discredit you.

These anonymous people signing under “For…(blogger’s name)” or “(blogger’s name) Fan”, etc are online snipers throwing potshots or misleading readers. Pretty dishonest juvenile behavior.

So, DR readers, sharpen your eyes on those sniper signatures and call it to the attention of the blogger on his/her site.

Yeah, I stopped using my name a while ago. It’s too risky. So I resort to using my initials from now on.

  10. Li-Li's Mom said,

That’s just ridiculous, and as Banjo says, anyone who would do such a thing is a coward.

I’m sorry you have to deal with ugliness like this.

For the record, I saw it just before your disclaimer, and noticed the unusual signature right away, which made me think there was something odd about the comment. Also, outing someone’s identity doesn’t seem like your style.

I saw it and just *knew* it wasn’t you…

Imiation is the best form of flattery…

    I saw it, too.

If the legal action on that sentiment, please give us the status.

I’d the same boat as you are referring to….someone have kept attacking me, I have ignored that person, nevertheless, he has not changed at all.

Your’e one of my favorite blogger. Try to cheer you up.

I have searched in vain for Mike McConnell’s blog wherein the comment
was posted (I searched through from
1 to 7 and stopped there). What is
    the title of his blog?

  17. DT said,

Soon or later, we all might have to set up registration feature that forces people to sign up where they’d have to sign in to leave a comment. That will prevent such a thing like this to happen again. I even have it on my site and I can turn it on if I want but let’s not go there unless I really have to.

I saw that and knew it was not even you. I find it hard to believe. I’m glad you caught it in time.

Yes, you and Egbert need to contact your attorney about this slander and libel.

We need to protect ourselves from that issue by setting up the registration.

DeafRead needs to address this such issue at hand soon. I’m sure they’re aware and may work on them.

Keep us posted when you find out more information.

If you click on the # there, it will take you to Mike’s blog where it is.

And thanks, guys. I am relieved people know better. I also talked with Brian Riley and he is aware that it was not me.

I also obtained the IP address, so we will see what happens.

  22. IamMine said,

    :)

    Glad you feel relieved!

May this be a lesson for all who consider doing this in the future and think twice.

That it’s illegal and you can be sued…

    Keep us posted, DP!

  23. ASL Risen said,

I hope Mike McConnell will help you by response back to your email.! He should respect you with the IP server!

  24. A Deaf Pundit said,

ASL Risen, yes, Mike McConnell gave me the IP address.

    Thanks, Mike!

  25. White Ghost said,

Glad that Mike gave you the IP address.

If the legal action in that sentiment is a go, let us know. So that way we all can learn from this kind of crime.

Bloggers can compete at each other, they can work together to support each other to make it right example. You guys are to be commented and I applaud for both of the bloggers. :-)

Too crazy and sad that someone would use your name like that. I even dreamed that someone used my name in vain on the blogosphere but realized it was a nightmare. What a coincidence that it actually happened to you! This is not acceptable and I hope your actions will prevent from this to happen to the others. Good luck!

  27. Mishkazena said,

Oh gee I am sorry this happened, Deaf Pundit.

I have seen that comment elsehwere under another signature.. Now I am wondering if someone is posting this comment all over, using different people’s names…What is this person trying to accomplish?

I’ll go over Mike’s and read his post.

Glad you posted a disclaimer.I know it’s not your style. People need to be made aware this is going on. I hope you’ll find out who this culprit is.
