An Idea…
I have a proposal for all of you v/bloggers and readers out there. How about we create our own PR campaign and put it on YouTube and Google Video?
My idea is this: All of us make a video clip signing with subtitles and/or if you can speak with your voice, just simply stating: ‘Equal Communication Access’
Then someone with film editing software can piece together all of the video clips into one then put it up on YouTube and Google Video. I think that would be a very effective PR campaign if there’s at least 10 people involved with this. I think it would be a pretty powerful video. So how about it, folks? You up to it?

This sounds like an excellent idea. One caveat: some people don’t know how to do subtitles.
How many lines are you looking for for each person? Exactly what message do you want us to convey in this ‘Equal Communication Access’?

At the most, two lines from each person.
It could go something like this: “I’m Deaf Pundit, a Deaf person, and we Deaf deserve Equal Communication Access.”
A hearing person who knows sign could do: “I’m blah, a hearing person, and support Equal Communication Access for the Deaf.”
The idea is to just hook people’s attention and get them talking/wondering about whether us deaf truly do have equal communication access, because we know we still do not.
It’ll get people talking then I’m working with some others to see whether a website can be set up. If not, I’ll most likely use Silent Cacophony for ECA.

sign + voice or sign + subtitles, either okay?

What do I need to look like?
Do I dress up like I’m going in for a job interview or something?
I’ll check back later…

Excellent idea!
I’d be more than happy to volunteer myself to do the subtitle for the video.
Just let me know.

BEG, yup either one is fine.
SG, that would rock! Thanks so much for volunteering!
A thought occurred to me.. There may be some hearing people who are allies of ours, but they do not know sign. So… Here’s another idea: Snap a picture of yourself holding up a sign saying: I’m hearing and I support Equal Communication Access for the Deaf.
If some deaf also are not comfortable with signing on camera, they could do the picture thing as well, then I could edit the pictures into a video, and SG/me could work on making the video clips and subtitles.

And IamMine, silly you!
You don’t have to dress up or anything.

IamMine-
How about wearing a suit and glasses? Do not forget to show New York Times along with a cup of coffee!

I’m in!
I got one going already, signing, voice and subtitle.
I was going to do this on my own and had planned more videos to spread the gospel of unbiased communication methods, ASL along with speech, English or whatever to the hearing culture.
I will get back to you next week because I am leaving now to prefish for a big Pro/Am Bass tournament this Saturday.
I can be in touch at the lake with my pager,

Deaf Pundit,
This is just a beginning of your PR idea,
You can make it grow with more ideas.

I don’t think speech is a good idea. I like the idea of either signing, or us hearies who can’t sign, holding something up. Put some kind of music behind it, but no speaking. I thnk it wil be more dramatic that way.
Dennis
PS – you tell me what to learn, and I will learn the ASL just for you. I’m already studying anyway.

Yeah. I think holding up a sign is better for those who don’t know ASL. Dennis, you willing to help with the background music?
WAD – good idea! Do that, IamMine!
John, yeah.. This is just the beginning.
I’ll set up an e-mail address for you all to send the video clips to. I’m looking at the Windows Movie Maker, and the videos need to be in .wmv mode so I can put all of the clips into one.

Wonderful idea!!! I’d love to participate, but no equipment. Dang.
One thought – please do NOT sign and voice. That conveys the wrong message on so many levels. I like Dennis’ idea about not voicing at all, but if one wants to voice, please tape yourself signing, voices off. Then do a voice-over of your signing. That’d be the best way to go – keep the two languages separate.

Yeah, I’ve decided that it’s probably not a good idea to have voicing in the videos. SeekGeo will help subtitle the ones that aren’t anyway.
FYI: I’ve made a new post regarding the PR campaign.
